The show combines visual art, fashion, dance and theatre. Artists create a wearable work of art and their chosen performer wears it while performing to music on a runway set up in the CV Art Gallery. A panel of judges awarded several prizes last night such as 'best use of recycled materials', 'best performance', etc. and there was also an 'Audience Choice' award that we had to cast our ballots for. Let me tell you that was one tough decision. There were so many amazing entries!
I try to keep this blog strictly store related but I'm writing this post anyways because it's local art and fashion related.....and was such a great show! The 3rd annual Wearable Art Show and competition took place this weekend at the Comox Valley Art Gallery. I was at the show last night - the third of 3 sold out evenings - and was totally blown away by the creations and the performances of our local artists! The piece below by Kari Glass is made of silk neckties and called "Hecate Queen of Night". The music for this piece by Jacob Lenc and the performance by Taelor Pelusey were fantastically eerie and won the award for 'Best Performance'. One of my favourites was "Enlightened Woman" below by Roberta and Tamara Ling which won the award for 'Best Use of Textiles'. Sadly, my photos of this piece turned out the worst......maybe because Tamara kept shedding layer after layer - essentially showcasing at least 5 completely different pieces! Here are just 2 of them..... The "Beach Bride" below by Joanne Pringle was made entirely of clay and won an award for the 'Wow Factor'! June Savage created "The Masquerade" below out of hundreds of toilet paper rolls and coffee cups.... "The Bevan Road Princess" below by Zabie Perry was made entirely out of things found in the dump and Shiva Perry performed a related poetry piece. They won the award for 'Most Poetic'. Winner of both the 'Audience Choice' award and 'Best Use of Recycled Materials' was the amazing creation below by Amanda Smetana. Performed by Sherry Couzens, "The Paper Bag Princess" was made out of recycled pattern paper and it was truly stunning! Congratulations to all of the artists involved and a huge thank you to the CV Art Gallery and sponsors for putting on such a fantastic show!
